About MAC

The Mising Autonomous Council was established in 1995 through the enactment of the Mising Autonomous Council Act by the Assam Legislative Assembly, with its headquarters located in Gogamukh, Dhemaji. Following its establishment, the first election of MAC took place in October 2013, leading to the formation of a duly elected body on November 6th. Since then, the council has operated smoothly, actively engaging in the development of its population.

Under the leadership of Honourable Chief Executive Member, Sri. Paramananda Chayengia, the Mising Autonomous Council has consistently demonstrated a proactive approach towards advancing the welfare of the Mising community. Sri. Paramananda Chayengia, leveraging his leadership skills, aims to drive meaningful changes for the betterment of the Mising populace.

Furthermore, the MAC Amendment Act of 2005 brought about revisions to the original act, extending its scope to accommodate other Scheduled Tribes populations as well as various non-tribal communities.

Council Area

The Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) area is situated along the Brahmaputra and Subansiri rivers, spanning from their headwaters in Tinsukia and Dhemaji districts to the Kaziranga National Park in Golaghat district, and up to the Jiabhoroli river in the north. The Mising people, belonging to the North Assam branch of the Tibeto-Burman linguistic group, primarily inhabit the floodplains or water meadows on both banks of these rivers.

In addition to the Mising tribe, other scheduled tribes such as the Bodos, Hajongs, Garos, Rabhas, Sonowal Kacharis, and Deuris, as well as non-tribal communities, also inhabit the MAC area.

MAC encompasses both Core Areas and Satellite Areas dedicated to fostering the social, economic, educational, ethnic and cultural advancement of the Mising and other tribal communities residing within its jurisdiction.

Core & Satellite Areas

Satellite Areas refer to regions consisting of non-contiguous clusters of villages primarily inhabited by Scheduled Tribes, where the Scheduled Tribes population comprises half or more of the total in the cluster, rather than necessarily in individual villages.

Core Areas denote the compact and contiguous regions predominantly inhabited by Scheduled Tribes, where the Scheduled Tribes population comprises half or more of the overall population locally, rather than necessarily in individual villages.
